Speaker Nancy Pelosi - who set out to become the first woman to lead the US House

Broke the "marble ceiling" - announced on Thursday that

 she would step down from the party administration.

Pelosi said, "With the utmost confidence in our House,

I will not seek re-appointment to vote-based administration in the next Congress.

 Another age has come for me to lead a vote-based gathering,

 whom I greatly respect." In a speech on the floor of the House.

 "I am grateful that so many people are willing to take on this onerous responsibility."

Pelosi said she would continue to address her San Francisco constituency in the House.
